Comparative Performance Evaluation of Commercial Packing Materials for Malodorants Abatement in Biofiltration

Packing materials used in biofiltration of gaseous pollutants represent a key design parameter, as proper selection might not only determine the adequate performance system but also its cost-effectiveness. This study systematically assessed and compared conventional plastic carrier with that two novel clay-based from SAINT GOBAIN for abatement model odorous stream composed H2S, methylmercaptan toluene. The packing were tested biotrickling filters, biofilters two-phase filter. exhibited higher adsorption potential under abiotic conditions, buffer capacity superior to rings when implemented filters operating at gas residence times low 7.5 s. Among biofilters, Filtralite Air AC supported almost complete H2S toluene removals time 20 s, while successfully eliminating values ~80%. Interestingly, most conditions tested, showed comparable pressure drop than those rings.
